A Methodology for Success

For a newly established project, your team will want to go through the full flow of the application design process.

This design philosophy includes four discrete steps, each of which builds on the previous step.

The User Experience Wireframes allow your team to validate revenue driving functionality is accessible, and that your app is easy to use.

The User Interface Guidelines set provides your team with a clean, consistent look and feel.

The User Interface Design is where your wireframes and design guidelines are combined into a sleek, presentable, and easy to use product.

The User Interface Prototype allows your team to rest assured that the click-through feel of your app is what you’re trying to achieve. This is often combined with the User Interface Design as a way to check and confirm the output.

It seems like a long, arduous process, but the truth is that jumping straight into the User Interface Design, which is often what inexperienced designers do, leads to more revisions and lack of consensus.

The final product of this methodology is not just a “design”, but a stakeholder whose business needs are validated and met.

The final product of a successful design cycle is one where users succeed at performing the functional flows that are critical to your prosperity.

Getting started

Your first step in establishing an effective application design is to create the User Experience Wireframes with a talented and experienced expert.

This step acts as a foundation which ensures that core functionality is accessible and that hierarchy within the application is correctly established. It takes into consideration the necessity to include room for growth as your project evolves. Most importantly these wireframes act as a consensus method for establishing the correct path forward for your team as quickly as possible.

The wireframe is a rough sketch of the layout, usually in black and white or some other simple color.

The intent of the wireframe is to get a feel for the correct user experience paradigm which you’ll be using across the application.

It’s your foundation to success

User Experience Wireframes are used in conjunction with your User Interface Guidelines to build your User Interface Design. They are the base coat in your masterpiece.

Your brand gets a consistent look and feel through guidelines

Your brand is a visual expression of who you want your users to be. The User Interface Guideline is your interface’s implementation of that brand into an easy to identify, fun to use version which your users interact with.

The User Interface Guideline will include explicit instructions for how to style your interface’s buttons, inputs, drop downs, switches, and much more.

Supplementary additions of iconography and illustrative elements go a long way to adding a personal, friendly touch to interfaces, which in turn encourage users to fulfill critical actions that will make your business a success.

Guidelines are a critical tool for your brand

The expected output of a well-run User Interface Guidelines cycle is a branding set that any designer or developer can use to continue building the product that will make your business a success.

Putting it all together

The culmination of the Application Design Process is a User Interface Design that melds together the User Experience Wireframes and the Guidelines Set into a living design your team can use to build your business.

With a well-run design cycle, the User Interface Design step is a straightforward paint-by-numbers affair. It acts as a confirmation that the previous steps met stakeholder needs, and that the required functionality is accessible, understandable, and clear.

A successful design is easy to use, easy to understand, and acts as an engine for your business.

A successful design evokes your brand, and leaves a positive impression in the minds of your users because it fits their needs.
